A certificate of analysis, commonly called a COA, is the document that connects a product you are holding to a specific lab result. It is not decoration, and it is not a substitute for reading the label. Used carefully, it shows what a laboratory reported for a submitted sample and whether the document provides enough identifiers to compare with the package.
Start with any lot or sample identifier shown on the package. Then look for the same identifier on the report. Only call it a match when both show the same value. A report labeled only by product name and date does not establish a package-level match.
Read the document in this order
- Product identity: The report should identify the product or material tested clearly enough to compare with the package. Look for a product name, sample description, or lot reference.
- Batch or lot number: This is the strongest link between the package and the report. Compare every character, including letters, numbers, and any prefix.
- Test date: The date helps place a report in time, but it does not establish a match to the package. It can help distinguish one submitted sample from another.
- Laboratory identity: The report should name the testing laboratory and provide enough information to identify who issued it.
- Methods and result units: Results only make sense when you know what was measured and how the result is expressed. Percentages, milligrams per gram, and milligrams per serving are different units.
- Result categories: Review the report category by category. A report may cover identity-related markers, microbial screening, heavy metals, or other listed analytes. Read the actual headings rather than assuming every COA covers the same panel.
Potency is a number, not a promise
A potency result describes the amount measured in the tested sample, using the unit shown on that report. It does not predict an individual experience, establish product quality by itself, or make two different formats directly comparable without conversion. Compare like with like: percentage to percentage, milligrams per gram to milligrams per gram, and a product's stated serving basis to the same serving basis on another label.
That discipline matters because raw plant material can vary. Understand pass, fail, and blank fields
A clear pass or fail result is useful only when the report tells you what threshold or specification it is using. A numerical result may be paired with a limit, a reporting threshold, or a notation such as not detected. Read any legend or footnote before drawing a conclusion. If a field is blank, omitted, or unclear, do not treat it as a passing result.
Documentation also has limits. A COA is a record for the sample submitted to a laboratory. It is not a blanket statement about every product a seller carries, and it cannot answer questions the report did not test.
